SLC Youth Leadership Training Program provides guidance and leadership training for at risk Somali American youth in Minnesota between the ages of 15 to 25 years. The purpose of the one-year SLC’s youth leadership training program is to provide leadership and professional development training to at least 50 Somali American youth at-risk of not going to college or not having a professional trajectory in Minnesota with the end goal of leading them to have healthy and productive lives as adults. The program will have four major components: (1) leadership training workshops (2) professional development counseling (3) peer mentoring (4) college preparedness counseling when applicable. The participants will also benefit from our civic participation and volunteer activities. SLC will work with schools, universities, families, and houses of worship to recruit participants.

Family Counselling and Chaplaincy Program

SLC Counselling and Chaplaincy Program focuses on enhancing family cohesion, sound and culturally appropriate parenting skills, and marriage counseling using evidenced-based Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) practices and Islamic principles. The three main components of the program are:

  1. Parenting classes

  2. Family crisis prevention through marriage counseling

  3. Parent acculturation in dealing with their American-born children. Dr. Khadar Jama, a certified CPE directs the program.

Youth Delinquency Prevention & Counselling Program

SLC Youth Delinquency Prevention & Counselling Program target at risk Somali American youth in Minnesota between the age of 15 to 25 years to decrease rates of recidivism and involvement with the criminal justice system through mentoring, clinical counseling, family engagement, and gang involvement prevention training. We will collaborate with families, juvenile courts, clinicians, and juvenile detention centers to assist our clients.
